For many years, Grindavík was one of the biggest fish processing towns in Iceland, but in November 2023 a state of emergency was declared and the town was evacuated due to severe seismic activity, followed by several volcanic eruptions in the area. Therefore — at the moment — The Department of Civil Protection and Emergency Management has closed all roads to the town and unauthorized traffic is prohibited for unspecified period of time.
