Countryside

Iceland has much to offer besides what can be found in Reykjavík. It is easy to rent a car in Iceland and a few days driving around to see more than just the capital area will be a time well spent. The rural landscapes alone are a good reason to leave the city and the forces of nature are constantly on display: Waterfalls, hot springs, crawling glaciers and active volcanoes. Provided an appropriate vehicle (four wheel drive necessary), a tour in the highlands is an unforgettable experience. However, the Icelandic countryside has more to offer besides the beautiful nature. All around the country there are smaller towns with various attractions, for instance, you will find a great deal of museums that cover aspects of local history and folklore. And when the day draws to an end, accommodation in the countryside is good, ranging from camping sites to full scale hotels. All on all, it is a real energy boost to go outside the capital city area and experience something new.
